I
discovered skateboarding events bring out the finest in
people. They are fun, exciting, and high energy. Perfect
ingredients for the sessions I seek. Where I am from on the
East Coast, there are not many skateboarding events
offered. This year I decided to look west and I discovered
the All Girl Skate Jam, a contest series specifically
organized for all girls, all ages, and all abilities.

June
30th, in Chula Vista, California I participated in
the All Girl Skate Jam held at the Coors Amphitheater as part
of the Vans Warped Tour. In the midst of 20,000 rockers, a
sheet metal mini ramp was unfolded like a red carpet for the
girls to skate. Ghetto in style with monster graffiti, the
mini ramp was 20-feet wide, 5-feet high, and roared like
thunder. Sessions were broken out in a jam style format with
approximately 8-10 skaters per heat. The heats lasted 30
minutes. With practices held before the contest start and
between heats there was plenty of skate time all day. Winners
from each heat made it into a final skate session for an extra
bonus round skating with the best of the best |

Like the East
Coast skateboarding events I have attended, the All Girls Skate
Jam delivered thrill, fun, and that motivating drive to take
skating to the next level. This event was also very different
from the East Coast events I have participated in. It was
exclusively all girls and there were several participants of all
ages and abilities. The diversity amongst the girls created a
unique scene where everyone, contestant or spectator, could walk
away discovering and seeing something new. The intensity of the
contest was combined in an environment of non-stop rock-n-roll
bands creating an entertaining, party type atmosphere. Large
crowds were drawn from the music and toward the skateboarding
action adding even more liveliness to the mix.

This setting was 100 % pure fun. Meeting up with old friends,
making new friends, rocking out to tunes, and skating high
energy sessions that last forever is what this All Girls Skate
Jam was all about. |
