After the breakdown of it's older wood and sheet metal built skatepark, the city of Bowie decided to upgrade their park into an all concrete facility.  The city hired the skate park construction company Breaking Ground, from Providence, RI, to design and build the new Bowie City skatepark.  Throughout the winter of 2005, the city held design meetings allowing both local and non-local skaters to give their inputs on what they would like to see in the new Bowie City skatepark.  Breaking Ground took in all suggestions and along with their expertise came up with a design to satisfy everyone.

The Breaking Ground crew worked very hard over the spring and summer of 2006 and on August 25th a Grand Opening was held, celebrating and opening the park up to all city registered skaters.

The Grand Opening of the park featured a City ribbon cutting, demo skate sessions by the Heater Skateboards Demo Team, Pro skaters Ray Fennessey and Derek Krasauskas, amateur skaters Susie Strege and Packard “Packy” Fancher, and all event participants joining in the sessions.  Autograph signings were given by featured demo skaters, as well as, prizes and handouts.  Live music was supplied by NagChaumpa.  Skaters all the way from the Outter Banks of North Carolina came to commemorate the opening, as well as, skaters from Virginia, New Jersey, city locals, and residents all across Maryland.

The Bowie skatepark, just like its opening day, is grand!  Special thanks goes out to Matt Reno, the city of Bowie, Breaking Ground, and all the skaters who helped and continue to help make this park a reality.
