Pat Wachter |
The Pat Wachter Pro Bowl Contest is Alabama’s first Pro
skateboarding Contest since the early 80s. The contest
was held at the Veterans Skatepark April 28-29, 2007 in
Alabaster, Alabama. Veterans Skatepark opened in April of
2006 and is Alabama’s first concrete Skatepark since the early
80s.
Brian Kelly, the Veteran’s Skatepark manager and owner of the
on-site skate shop Ride, had a vision. He wanted to see more
concrete skate parks in the state of Alabama. Brian made a
great effort to bring attention and focus back to the concrete
skatepark. His goal was to educate Alabama on what a quality,
concrete skatepark can create and bring to communities.
He organized skateboarding demos, learn to ride clinics,
summer skate camp, and a contest series. All these efforts
unfortunately produced little or no awareness. The effort
though was not in vain.
Pat Wachter, Alabama’s first Pro Skateboarder, and his team of
skaters had been participating in Brian Kelly’s contest
series. During one of the contests, Brian entertained the
idea to Pat of having a Pro bowl contest and naming it in
honor of him. The Pro contest would bring in the
publicity, attention, and awareness that Brian was striving so
hard for. Pat was delighted. Together, the two of them
created the first annual Pat Wachter Pro Bowl Contest.
The contest gained support from the World Cup Skateboarding
organization and became
a World Cup Skateboarding event.
