February 8-18, 2008

The Island of Puerto Rico is the "Surfing Capitol of the Atlantic".  The Island is located in the Caribbean, East of the Dominican Republic maintaining a year round warm, tropical climate with water temperatures in the mid 70s-80s.  The Islands location supplies itself with year round surf generated from passing tropical storms and winter low pressure systems.  Puerto Rico right now has over 60 known surf breaks.  "The best and most consistent surf areas in Puerto Rico are the north, northwest, and west coasts of the island." "Best in February".

So in February we decided to take an 10 day adventure to the surfing town of Rincon.  Rincon is located in the Coastal Valley on the western tip of the Island.  Rincon is "home to many of the best surfing beaches in Puerto Rico, including Domes, Marias, Tres Palmas, Sandy Beach, Pools Beach, and Rincon Town Beach Plaza"
We arrive at our home sweet home, a tiny deck house overlooking Pools Beach.  And its dead flat.  Not a wave in site.

After lots of snorkeling adventures, we ran into this dog who told us if we wanted to find surf we should head North to Surfer Beach.  So we stacked up the boards and headed North in search of Surfer Beach.

We never found Surfer Beach.  We got lost a few times and instead stumbled upon Jobos Beach, one of the many surf beaches near the town of Isabela.  Jobos fortunately for us is the most consistent break on the Island.  Jobos Beach is formed from a very large exposed reef.  The reef forms a natural pool.  At the pools edge the water is very shallow and gradually deepens to meet the currents.  Waves wedge up, break off of the reefs tip, and empty into the reef made pool.  On the other side of the pool waves slam up against the exposed reef, showering the reef with spray

Best thing about Jobos is the bar/grill sitting right there on the beach.  This place was rated as serving the best mofongo on the Island.  Mummm Mumm it sure was tasty.

There is plenty to do in Purto Rico when the surf goes flat...

And then out of the deep blue, green sea they came marching in sets toward Rincon for a solid three days.  Out front at Pools it was closing out a bit, so we hiked over to our neighboring break to Domes for some very fun rides.
