Skating in GTMO ?
GTMO is a military base on the
southern part of Cuba. The United States have been leasing
the land for over 50 years. On my first trip there back in
2003 I was unable to find the time outside of work to really
scope out the Island. While driving to work one day I did
spot a drainage ditch that I vowed to skate if I ever were to
return.
Nearly one year later, that
opportunity arises. Having a layover in Florida the night
before I attempt to get a quick skate in at
Kona or St.Augustine.
Both expeditions were rained out. Hoping for the best I
fly out to Cuba.
On the
last day of my travels I end up finding some time away from work
to skate the drainage ditch. Earlier that day one of
soldiers spotted my skate shoes and offered to drive me there and
take some pictures. After watching me skate the ditch he
adds, "Would you care to go skate the skate park here? There are
lights" I am sure the look on my face was priceless.
So much for being the first to skate the drainage ditch.
If by chance you find yourself headed to GTMO, take your skate
along to help pass the time. Enjoy the pics.
On the way out we spotted this ramp behind the youth center. I
went in to inquire about it and was stiffly warned that anyone
over 18 is prohibited. He then looked me up and down and
said "if you hop the fence, I will come after you can
prosecute!" So I just snapped a quick pic and left.
Over 18? phttttt...
